Gary K. Van Slyke, of Griffith Rd., Pike, died Thursday December 28, 2017 in Buffalo General Hospital, Buffalo at the age of 74.
He was born January 22, 1943 in Warsaw, New York a son of the late Kenneth and Onalee (nee Davies) Van Slyke. He was a 1960 graduate of Letchworth Central School in Gainesville and attended Cornell University.
He was a dairy farmer and partner in Van Slyke's Dairy Farm in Pike. He was awarded the New York State Outstanding Young Farmer in 1972 and was an FFA Empire Farmer. He was a member and had served as President of the Wyoming County Farm Bureau; was on the Agway Coop Board of Directors and had served as president; member of NEDPA (North East Dairy Producers Association) and had served on the agriculture advisory board at Letchworth Central. He had a love of Ford tractors. He was a member of Triluminar Lodge #543 F & AM in Pike.
In the 1960's-70's Gary helped organize the Western New York Tractor Pullers Association (WNYTPA) and had served as its' president. He was a member, on the Board of Directors and a past-president of the Wyoming County Fair Association and was the assistant Superintendent for the big tractor pulls. He had served on the Pike Town Board for 25 years and had served as deputy Supervisor. He was a member of the Pike Fire Department and Rescue Squad for 57 years, had served as Assistant Chief and President of the Fire Co. and Captain of the Rescue Squad. He was honored in 2015 as the Grand Marshall of the Wyoming County Fair Firemen's Parade.
He is survived by his wife - Ginny (nee Wing) Van Slyke whom he married in 1964; a daughter - Kelly (Dan) Matteson of Reno, NV; two sons - Kevin (Michelle) Van Slyke of Chapel Hill, TN and Ken (Tonya) Van Slyke of Pike; seven grandchildren - Cole & Hope Matteson, Renee, Tim and Grace Van Slyke, Kyle & Kolby Van Slyke; two sisters - Gwynne Wetherall of Warsaw and Gretchen (Jeff) Jackson of Warsaw and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call Wednesday January 3, 2018 and Thursday January 4, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at W. S. Davis Funeral Home, Inc., 358 W. Main St., Arcade, where a Firemen's service will be held Thursday at 6 pm and funeral services will be held Friday January 5, 2018 at 11 am. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Pike.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Pike Fire Department, 67 E. Main St., Pike or the Pike Library, 65 E. Main St., Pike.
